Matip sustained a knee injury during Liverpool's 4-3 win against Fulham on Sunday and Klopp was cynical about his condition, saying after the game and then again on Tuesday that the situation did not look good. After his side's 2-0 win at Sheffield United on Wednesday, the manager confirmed the extent of the issue.

The news comes as a big blow for the Anfield side, who also saw Alexis Mac Allister forced off with an injury in their midweek win. Klopp has already had to make do without the likes of Alisson, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Andy Robertson due to injury.

"It’s an ACL. Ruptured," Klopp told reporters after Wednesday's win match at Bramall Lane. "That’s unfortunately what I expected from the first second. It looked like that. Very unfortunate, but that’s it."
