It was confirmed on Wednesday that Newcastle United loanee Islam Slimani, rated at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, had been called up by Algeria for their upcoming friendly matches despite not playing a single minute for the Magpies following his move from Leicester City in January, and Toon fans were quick to react to the news.
The Tyneside outfit signed the 29-year-old on loan until the end of the season on deadline day, but he is yet to make an appearance for them as he recovers from a thigh problem he was suffering from when he moved to St James’ Park, which suggests it was a risk they were wrong to take.
The centre-forward will be hoping to be fit for the home clash against Huddersfield Town on March 31, but his injury issues haven’t stopped him being called up to represent his country.
Newcastle supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the news, and while one said “joke if he goes”, another said he “should not be allowed to go”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
